Abstract     A simple mathematical model, based on a linear adsorption isotherm, was used to determine the exchangeable metal pool (a0) of soils and sediments, including the partitioning coefficient (KD) for this pool. Experimental data plots giving volume/mass ratio or repetitive extraction vs extracted metal concentration were fitted with this model. Good fits (no significant difference at the 1% level) were obtained for literature data on the extractability of exchangeable chromium and nickel from sandy soil and river sediment, respectively.
