Abstract		The definition of osteoporosis is crucial in understanding the etiology of the fragility fractures in the elderly. It influences the bone mechanics of the fracture and its treatment. The authors discuss the epidemiology of these fractures and the aging crisis in Slovenia. The prefractural morbidity influences the choice of method of treatment and final outcome.
