Abstract     Introduction The aim of any strength training in sport is to improve functional ability. Numerous studies performed so far have shown that isokinetic strength training (IT) can improve the maximal strength of the quadriceps. In general the studies indicate that muscles do not generate the same maximum force through all movement phases, which represents a major limitation in e.g. weight lifting. Although manufacturers of weight lifting equipment have devised variable-resistance training equipment to help alleviate the problem, one of the instruments: the irregularly shaped metal cam, still represents a classic mode of weight lifting. Therefore, all the studies performed recently have concluded that IT represents a more efficient way of training muscles. However, the problem with the studies performed so far was the fact that statistical samples were too small and that there were significant differences in training protocols. Other studies have focused on the correlation between maximal strength and cross-section of the muscle or on the relationship between morpho-logical changes and strength training. The changes in muscle strength can be related to the specific speeds of training, as there are differences in the acquisition of moment. Low-frequency electrostimulation (NMES-LFES) is used to strengthen muscles. Studies indicate that application of electrostimulation for muscle strengthening is effective in the early phase of rehabilitation provided that electrostimulation is performed with wire netting electrostimulators. This method produces 10% of MVC necessary to achieve improvement of maximal strength. The aim of this study is to explore the effect of IT and NMES-LFES and their combination on maximal quadriceps strength. This topic is still very challenging for research considering the fact that knee injuries represent the majority of all injuries in sport. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
