Abstract     Background. Essential arterial hypertension begins in childhood and can be clinically seen in the reenage years. Methods. From 1978 to 1981 arterial blood pressure was measured during regular systematic check-ups in 8583 children and teenagers aged from 7 ro 19 years, using a mercury manometer according to the instructions and programmes of a particular procedure. Results. In schoolchildren aged 7-14, statistically significantly higher serum cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, urate and glucose values were found in the hypertensive group. In the age group of 15 - 19 in the hypertensive schoolchildren, only significantly higher HDL-cholesterol and urate values were established. Conclusions. Significantly higher triglyceride values in normotensive schoolchildren of both age groups are surprising. The starting-point values of lipids, lipoproteins, urate and glucose in schoolchildren with essential arterial hypertension were not significantly different from the adequate values in the same individuals after five years (tracking). The percent of pathological values of serum cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol was relatively high in the hypertensive (21 per cent , 17 per cent ) and normotensive group (11 per cent , 8 per cent ).
