Abstract     Virus hepatitis, especially type B hepatitis, used to be a major problem in dialysis units throughout the world until the beginning of active immunization in 1982. Active immunization against hepatitis 8 is based on the production of anti-HBs antibodies. The problem in dialysis patients is the impaired immune response to vaccine. In our dialysis 34% of currently 110 patients treated in our dialysis unit did not develop anti-HBs antibodies upon vaccination, which is consistent with the data obtained from literature. Additional intramuscular or intradermal application of vaccine, as well as application of adjuvant agents are recommended for the improvement of the immunological response. The aim of this paper is to describe the current situation and to point out the problems connected with anti-HBV vaccination in our dialysis unit.
