Abstract     Background. The aim of the research was the 5-yearfollow-up of blood pressure in children and adolescents with essential arterial hypertension. Methods. From 1978 to 1981 arterial blood pressure was measured during regular systematic check-ups in 8583 children and teenagers aged from 7-19 years, using a mercury manometer according to the instructions and programmes of a particular procedure. Results. The prevalence of hypertension in this study was 1.2 per cent (103 out of 8583 schoolchildren, both sexes, aged 7- l9 years); 96 (93 per cent ) of schoolchildren had essen al, 7 (7 per cent ) had secondary hypertension. After five years of follow-up 81 out of 96 investigated individuals with essential arterial hypertension came to control and 71 (88 per cent ) still had pathological blood pressure values, while 10 (12 per cent ) had normal values. All of these I2 per cent belonged to the highest percentile blood pressure class. Conclusions. No statistically significant differences bettveen the blood pressure values for individual years were established (between the first and second, the second and third, the third and fourth, the fourth and fifth year of follow-up). This is valid for the highest, the lowest pathological and the fowest measured systolic and diastolic blood pressure (the tracking phenomenon of blood pressure). After five years the phenomenon of regression toward the mean was present in the highest systolic, in the lowest pathological diastolic and in the lowest measured systolic and diastolic pressure. diastolic essential hypertension was established. After five years a statistically signifcantly higher frequency of
