Abstract     Biopsy of the small intestine is a golden standard in establishing a diagnosis of coeliac disease. The procedure is uncomfortable for children and recquires parent's permission. That is the reason why screening methods which would reduce the number of biopsies, or at least would state reliable criteria for a biopsy, have been searched for. For this purpose we were researching the importance of ultrasound examination of the small intestine when discovering coeliac disease in comparison with the established screening methods of searching serum antiendomysial antibodies IgA and histopatologic examination of the small intestine. We were ascertaining the value of ultrasound examination in comparison with another two diagnostic methods also in further monitoring of children with coeliac disease. Respondents: We examined 55 children of the average age of 5,1 years (8 months - 18 years), 32 boys, 23 girls and divided them into four groups. In the lst group there were 15 children with recently discovered coeliac disease; in the 2nd group 10 children who were on average 4,6 years on the gluten diet. In the 3rd group there were 15 children who went back to normal nutrition (loaded with gluten) which lasted for 2,3 years. In the 4th; control group, there were 15 children with the signs of malabsorption. We made biopsy of the small intestine in diagnostic procedure but it did not prove to be coeliac disease.
