Abstract     Standpoints: People older than 65, according to the World Medical Organisation, are classified as senior people. When strength and activities of body organs' systems begin to fail and due various disturbances of other illnesses, a senior person becomes slower at receiving, deciding and reacting in traffic situation. With the improvement of life conditions and the development of medical science the length of life prolonged too. Each year the number of people older than 65 years is higher and also is the number of senior drivers. Purpose of the research: The purpose of the research is to present the number and the weight of traffic accidents caused by persons older than 65 years in comparison to other age groups in Slovenia, for the period of three years, and therefore contribute to the expand of knowledge about the endangereousness of senior drivers. Aims of the research: The aim of the research is to estimate the share of senior people in Slovenia involved in traffic accidents in comparison to other age groups considering the following: the role and type of a participant, reasons and consequences of an accident, characteristics of the environment and the time of the accident, category of road. Further, it is important to estimate the weight of the accident with index A or B, to define the factors of risk and propose certain measures for a more successful prevention and the reduction of the weight of traffic accidents in Slovenia. Methods and material: The research includes Slovene citizens of all age groups, both sexes, people who experienced traffic accidents and were treated by police in Slovenia, in the period between 01.01.1998 and 31.12.2000. The research is a retrospective study, basing on the information of the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Slovenia. It concerns the territory of Slovenia for the period of three years, processed by a chi2 test. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
