Abstract     Microbiological analysis for detection of food-borne spoilage microorganisms and food pathogens is a standard practice for ensuring food safety and quality. Novel methods for the detection microorganisms in food are an alternative to traditional detection and identification methods. These novel methods have several advantages such as speed, low detection limit and the ability of automation. But for their standardization several criteria such as diagnostic accuracy, detection limit, high speed, costs, and simplicity must be fulfilled. The present review focuses on novel microbiological methods for the detection of foodborne microorganisms (PCR detection, hybridization methods and real-time PCR), their advantages and deficiencies. For discrimination of food-borne pathogens on different levels the genotyping methods are useful for epidemiological and taxonomical studies.
