Abstract     Increase in illicit drug use in Europe may influence traffic safety. The paper presents epidemiological data that call attention to the extent of the problem, and resumes the Slovene traffic safety legislation and enforcement measures taken by the police when suspecting a subject of drunk or drugged driving. Statistics based on toxicology of driver samples provided by the General Police Office and Institute of Forensic Medicine are presented, as well as the results of research into effects of some illicit drugs on driving ability. Statistics indicate that the number of drug tests and expert examinations ordered for drivers has been constantly growing, which may indicate an upward trend in drugged driving, but, on the other hand, the proportion of positive alcohol tests (29.2%-56.8%) and positive tests for other illicit drugs (19.8%-26.5%) suggests increased sensitivity of Slovene police officers to this issue, and a more consistent endorsement of drug and alcohol testing regulations and enforcement measures.
