Abstract     The article deals with genetically modified organisms in food which have a rather short history in human diet. Genetic engineering in undoubtedly the strongest weapon developed by man to reshape nature. Advocates of genetically modified food believe this will enable will bring a variegated, cheaper and qualitative diet, believe in progress in medicine and pharmacy and cleaner environment. Greatest optimists see it as a formula to abolish hunger in the world. On the other hand, skeptics maintain that there is no proof that genetically modified food is absolutely safe in the long run. More time and means should be dedicated to research work which will bring answers to at least two questions: is consumption of genetically modified food safe in the long run and will genetic manipulation of plants influence the environment. All over the world, protests against genetically modified food are organized. In Slovenia as well, the theme of genetically modified organisms in food is becoming more and more subject of professional and political debates. Consumers have a right (also legal right) to be able to choose and be informed.
Summary     Članek obravnava gensko spremenjene organizme v hrani, ki imajo v prehrani človeka relativno kratko zgodovino. Genski inženiring je gotovo najmočnejše orodje, ki ga je razvil človek za preoblikovanje narave. Zagovorniki gensko spremenjenih živil verjamejo, da bo prinesla pestrejšo, cenejšo in bolj kakovostno hrano, verjamejo v napredek v medicini in farmaciji ter čistejše okoljske tehnologije. Največji optimisti vidijo v njej formulo za odpravo lakote po svetu. Na drugi strani pa nasprotniki in skeptiki trdijo, da ni nobenega dokaza, da so gensko spremenjena živila dolgoročno povsem varna za uživanje. Več časa žn sredstev bi morali nameniti znanstvenoraziskovalnemu delu. Na ta način bi lažje odgovorili na dvoje: ali je uživanje gensko spremenjenih živil dolgoročno varno za človeka in kako bo gensko spreminjanje rastlin vplivalo na okolje. Povsod po svetu se vrstijo protesti potrošniških in okoljevarstvenih organizacij. Tudi v Sloveniji postaja tema o gensko spremenjeni hrani predmetstrokovnih in političnih razprav. Potrošnik ima nesporno pravico (tudi po zakonu) do izbire in obveščenosti.
