Abstract     External fixation of fractures in children and youth is a method, which is used in treatment of open fractures, closed fractures with extended soft tissue damage, previously unsuccessful conservative treatment and in polytraumatized patients. Advantages of this method are relatively simple technic of application, minimal additional trauma to the soft tissues, stable fixation and early mobilisation of neighbouring joints. Potential shortcomings such as pin tract infection, refracture, joint stiffness and malunion can be avoided with proper technique of application, on time dinamisation of external fixator and careful follow-up of injured children. We discuss ten cases of long bone fractures in children and youth, who were treated with external fixation in our surgical department from 1997 to 2002.
