Abstract     Fractures of the distal end of the radius are among the most common skeletal injuries, and treatment of these tractures has changed over the course of time. The fracture pattern, degree of displacement, the stability of the fracture, and the age and physical demands of the patient determine the best treatment option. Aim of the study was monitoring the use of external fixators in period from 1993 till 2002 in all age groups and evaluating the results of treatment in different time periods during 10 years. We analyzed retrospectively number of operatively treated patient, age, gender, frequency of external fixator use and wrist flexibility at the beginning of use of external fixators, after the initial learning phase and at the end of decade. In the period from January 1993 till December 2002 we carried out 804 operations of distal radial fractures. Of the 804 patients operatively treated for distal radial fracture, we used external fixator in almost 70% of cases, especially in last five years. Modifying our approach, toward more frequent use of external fixator, we approved wrist flexibility after the operative treatment of distal radial fractures. Besides well know usage of internal tixation with plates, screws and K-wires, we increased the usage of external fixators particularly after the year 1997. By making the right choice for one or the other method and by improving the techniques of them both, we achieved a very satisfying level of wrist flexibility in all age groups.
