Abstract | The main goal of occupational health and safety is to prevent and avoid all hazards that can lead to injury or illness. We all know it is not possible to live without risks, however, it is essential that we try toreduce this risks to the minimum. Risk assessment enables us to determine, whether the working process is unsafe and whether remaining risk is at an acceptable level. If risk assessment is not done on the basis of real data and if it is only an approximation of thesituation, it represents just a document which law requires us to do. It is worthless to the company and it’s employees, and should be rejected by the labour inspector. Only an assessment based on objective ecological (measuring the on the environment burdens), biological (measuring of burden in the biological material) and epidemiological monitoring (that analyses the effects of working conditions on the of workers’ health by studying data of workers ill health) can provide us with the answer how to abolish, reduce or at least control specific occupational risks. The medical part of the risk assessment should therefore always be based on preliminary monitoring and workers’ health indicators. Analyses should derive from real indicators, such as occupational injuries and diseases, sick leave, or the frequency of permanent disability (these are most common indicators) or by indicators which are more difficult to measure, e.g. unhappiness, fatigue, weariness, etc. Only such analyses can enable us to find the risks and corresponding realistic safety measures. Experts and laymen agree that most of the evaluations are in fact documents, which failed to provide our expectations, and as such do not add to a higher level of occupational health and safety.
