Abstract		Charophytes are green algae which play an important role in aquatic ecosystems. They are pioneers among aquatic macrophytes and as the first colonizing the sediment of a newly created water body. During the last decade 4 genus are found in Slovenia, genus Chara, Nitellopsis, Nitella in Tolypella. Chara with 9 species is the riches genus with Chara vulgaris as the most extended species. An article deals with ecology of Charophytes, their role as indicators of pollution and their propagation.
