Abstract     A total of 639 Holstein Friesian (HF) heifers were divided into two groups according to the course of their calving: group A with a normal course of calving and group B with heifers that had difficulties. The purpose of the study was to determine the factors influencing these difficulties. A significantly higher birth weight of calves from the heifers from group B caused difficulties at calving. The body weight of calves from the heifers with difficulties at calving was inappreciably affected by the age (r=0.015) and body weight of heifers at conception (r=0.062). The fathers of heifers did not influence calving difficulties of the heifers from group B, because they equally participated in the conception of the heifers from both groups. Of all the bulls that had inseminated the heifers in this study, two inseminated sifnificantly more heifers from group B and through a significantly greater birth weight of their calves affected their difficulties at calving. The heifers with difficulties at calving had a retained placenta, endometritis and ketosis by 4 per cent more frequently, hence their culling being significantly more frequent as well
