Abstract     Karyological studies on three common food fishes, namely Puntias ticto (Hamilton), Puntias sophore (Hamilton) and Macrognathus aculeatum (Bloch) and one other freshwater species of fish, Aplocheilus panchax (Hamilton) were carried out and the results are presented in this communication. The karyotype of P. Ticto with 2n-48 consisted of 28M, 16SM and 4T chromosomes, which it was 10M, 2SM, 26ST and 10T in the case of P. sophore with 2n=48. In the case of the latter two spacies M. aculeatum had a diploid number of 48 chromosomes with 12M and 26T types. The diploid number in A. panchax was 38 the karyotype consisted of 12M, 10SM, 14ST and 12T chromosome types
