Abstract     Ultrasound is the most frequently used imaging method in detecting liver diseases, benign and malignant tumors and focal liver lesions. Despite its many advantages, the main disadvantages of this method are low sensivity and specificity in discriminating focal liver lesions. Benign liver tumors are the commonest among primary hepatic neoplasms. Among benign tumors, hemangioma is the most common, followed by focal nodular hyperplasia and adenoma. In this article the author describes the most significant characteristics of these lesions. In the diagnostic procedure, characterization is based on the results of different imaging methods: computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and scintigraphic techniques, morphological characteristics of tumors and laboratory tests, including activity of tumor markers.
