Abstract     Renal sonography is used principally to assess kidney size, cortical thickness and echogenicity, corticomedullary differentiation and the status of the pelvicalyceal system. Ultrasound retains a central role in the imaging of a wide variety of renal diseases, from the primary investigation of renal mass lesions to the initial assessment of patients with renal failure. Doppler techniques have allowed an extension of that role to the evaluation of certain renal vascular diseases. The authors present the role of renal ultrasonography in patients with different renal diseases.
