Abstract     The number of referrals from primary care physicians to specialists is increasing. The quality of communication between GPs and specialists is very important as it contributes to better results of treatment and to the patients' satisfaction, but it also lowers the costs of health care. Unfortunately, the quality and quantity of the information that physicians exchange with the referrals is often incomplete and unsuitable. The article discusses the reasons for the increased number of referrals, the communication problems between physicians, and suggests some possibilities for improving communication.
