Abstract     The experiment lasted ten days. Fishes were placed in seven basins, ten fishes in each, with fifteen liters of the toxic solution per basin. The concentration of lindan in the basins was: 0, 0, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 microgramme.L power -1. The gills of dead fishes were treated with standard histological methods. Pathological changes in the gills testify the great toxicity of lindan. Cell hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the lamellar epithelial sheath were observed. Necrotic decomposition and separation of the epithelium from the supporting pillar was also conspicuous. These disorders are various forms of the effect of the lindan concentration usually resulting in an osmotic and respiratory stress
