Abstract     An icosahedral cytoplasmic deoxyvirus was isolated from moribund adult green frogs (Rana esculenta L.). The agent was found in 11 out of 16 examined specimens, 15 of which having a haemorrhagic syndrome. However, parenteral inoculation or exposure to the virus did not cause disease in adult green frogs during 30 observation days. The virus replicated in four fish cell lines (FHM, EPC, PG and TG), but not in RTG-2 cells. It caused CPE in EPC cells at temperatures from 5 to 30 degrees C. The hexagonal DNA-containing virus was labile to chloroform and located in the cytoplasm, thus sharing characteristics with Iridoviridae. The findings are discussed in relation to two earlier reports on green frog viruses in Europe and the present knowledge on North American frog iridoviruses
