Abstract     Clinical physiology and pathology of the omasum are not as yet adequately known, mostly due to its sheltered position which obstructs its clinical examination. For this reason the related diagnostic methods are scarce and unreliable. Slanina (1959) and Slanina and Rossow (1963, 1964) propose the method of forcing the injection needle into the omasum lumen. In this work the reliability and practical application of this diagnostic method are explored. The omasum is punctured through the abdominal wall. By observing the movement of the injection needle free end forced into the omasum and estimating the resistance at the needle top when piercing the wall and content of the omasum, an insight is gained into the omasum motoricity and the consistency of its content. The examinations were carried out in 26 clinically healthy head of cattle and 40 head of cattle affected with various diseases of the digestive system including 6 cases of primary and 8 cases of secondary obstipation (paresis) of the omasum. It has been found that the puncturing of the omasum is a simple and useful addition to the clinical examination of the bovine digestive system. It provides not only and insight into the motoricity of the omasum and the consistency of its content but also allows the sampling of its content for further analysis. Moreover, it may also serve for therapeutic purposes, because to the omasum lumen, through the puncture cannula, appropriate medicines could be applied
