Abstract     Esophageal and tracheoesophageal speech are the generally accepted types of voice communication following laryngectomy. The complications associated with tracheoesophageal speech are important for choosing between the two methods. In order to evaluate their importance, complications developing in 23 patients who had had their voice prostheses secondarily fitted at the University Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Cervicofacial Surgery, Ljubljana, Slovenia, were retrospectively identified. The complications we found were not life or health threatening. Their management was simple and effective. In almost all cases, outpatient replacement of the voice prosthesis was sufficient for treatment. As voice prostheses are more effective and provide better speech compared to esophageal speech, they should be offered as the primary choice. The accompanying complications should not be considered contraindications.
Summary     Ezofagealni in traheoezofagealni govor sta uveljavljena načina povrnitve govora po odstranitvi grla zaradi maligne bolezni.
