Abstract     Studied was the influence of magnesium ions upon the cAMP phosphodiesterase activity in the blood serum of nine different species of animals. It was found that the phosphodiesterase activity in the blood serum of all studied animals can be increased by adding Mg++ as a natural effector but with different intensity. The effects of Mg++ was mostly pronounced in the serum of the dog and then in the sera of the goose, pig, hen, rabbit, carp, cattle, horse, and the least pronounced in the rat, hydrolysis being completely even without Mg++. The influence of two known inhibitors from the methylxanthine group - theophylline and caffeine - in the serum of the pig was also studied: at the 10 power -3 M concentration both compounds inhibit the phosphodiesterase activity but at a lower concentration (10 power 4 M) their effect sometimes varies
