Abstract     Advances in laser technologies and development of modern laser systems brought new treatment options for many patients. General practitioners should provide some basic information to their patients and give them realistic expectations about laser therapy. They should also be aware of benefits and drawbacks, side effects and complications of laser treatment. The present paper deals with basic principles of laser therapy in dermatology and plastic surgery. Laser treatment of benign cutaneous tumors and superficial skin lesions (seborrhoic hyperkeratosis, fibroepithetial polyps, warts, hypertrophic scars, rhinophyma, xanthelasma, rithydes and sun damaged skin) and benign vascular lesions (port wine stains, senile angioma, telangiectasia, venous lake, pyogenic granuloma, dilatated veins of lower extremity) are presented. The possibility of incorrect clinical judgment and inproper treatment, transient and permanent side effects, the importance of proper selection of treatment options and optimal laser setting are stressed out.
