Abstract     The author analysed the results of operative and conservative treatment of calcaneus fractures in the last 10 years and established that by applying conservative treatment somewhat better, but not statistically significantly better results were attained. On the average, the mobility of the ankle joint and the talocalcaneal joint was also better in conservatively treated patients than in those treated operatively and the period of treatment was significantly shorter. Taking this ascertainment and possible complications burdening every operative therapy into consideration, the author gives priority to conservative treatment. But he does not renounce the value of operative therapy or its application, since there are fractures in which no favourable results can be expected without operative treatment. He does suggest greater caution in setting indications for operative treatment. The decision in each individual case remains in the hands of the attending surgeon.
