Abstract     Slovene natural health resorts with their health programs form a part of the organized medicine in Slovenia. According to the agreement with Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia, the health resorts are ranked, subject to the kind of diseases to be cured, into different standards. Standard type 4 defines a health resort for treatment of patients with neurological diseases, injuries and diseases of central and peripheral nervous system, including cerebrovascular insults and neuromuscular disorders. For treatment purposes they use natural thermal water or thermo-mineral water and methods of rehabilitation medicine, physical therapy, work therapy and rehabilitation care. Health resorts must be built and equipped to the purpose and sufficient number of qualified medical staff must be available. Patients are directed, after an apoplectic stroke, to the health resort in different time intervals. The basic aim is to rehabilitate motor functions and learn basic daily activities. Usually they are sent from a medical centre in three weeks after they had a stroke. The rehabilitation of a patient sent to a health resort directly from a hospital is a subacute rehabilitation. At the admission of a patient, his/her remaining rehabilitation potential is evaluated, including gait and efficiently carried out basic routine activities. After that a suitable rehabilitation program is prescribed. The hydrotherapy program starts 6 to 8 weeks after a stroke if there exist no other contraindications. Motor re-education of neuromuscular system is combined with various techniques of kinesiotherapy or goal-oriented therapeutic exercises for individual treatment of a patient. For stimulation of muscular contraction we use functional electrical stimulation. Physiotherapists teach and advise patients and their relatives. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
