Abstract     The incidence of lesions of the osteomuscular apparatus and peripheral nervous system was studied in 6234 newborn babies born in the Maternity Ward of the Sestre Milosrdnice Clinical Hospital between 1988 and 1990. The incidence of intrapartal traumas was 4.5 per cent. Among these, simple traumas accounted for 97 per cent and multiple traumas for 3 per cent of examinees. Most numerous were fractures of the clavicle (3.6 per cent) and torticollis (0.48 per cent), followed by paresis of the brachial plexus (0.19 per cent) and fractures of the humerus (0.03 per cent). The traumas were diagnosed in these patients immediately after birth. The newborn with fractures of the clavicle received no special treatment apart from special care. Other types of trauma were treated by rehabilitation. Complete cure was achieved in infants with torticollis and fracture of the humerus and in 40 per cent of those with lesion of the brachial plexus. This study points to the need of primary prevention and to the importance of secondary prevention in handicapped children
