Abstract     Bacterial vaginosis (BV), a clinical syndrome and the most prevalent cause of vaginal discharge and malodor in women, results from replacement of the normal vaginal lactobacillus with high concentration of anaerobic bacteria, Gardnerella vaginalis and Mycoplasma hominis. It has been associated with increased risk for obstetric complications (miscarrige, preterm labour, preterm rupture of membranes, postpartum endometritis and the potpartum complications of the newborn). BV is asymptomatic in as many as 40% women. Screening and treatment of BV in the general population of pregnant women is not recommended as a means to prevent preterm delivery. Screening and treatment of BV in certain women at high risk for pretem delivery may be useful as means to decrease their chances of pretem delivery and preterm rupture of membranes.
