Abstract     We tested 39 healthy volunteers with a test used as a diagnostic method for latent tetany. We produced a 3 minutes ischaemia by a pneumatic cuff of a sphygmomanometer placed on the upper arm. A 3 minutes long hyperventilation followed. During the test EMG was continuously observed. The first blood sample was taken before ischaemia and the second when the typical potentials appeared or after 3 minutes hyperventilation if there were no typical potentials. We established that the specificity of the test was only 0.05, which is too low to be used for diagnostic purposes. The results of the blood samples showed that the levels of Ca ion, pH, HCO3, albumin and protein changed significantly during the rest. The correlation between the time whan typical EMG potentiats appear, the duration ard the levels of of.electrolytes was found only between total Ca of the first sample and duration of EMG potentials. The results show that our test is not appropriate to estimate and predict how the changes of blood electrolytes influence the neuromuscular excitability.
