| Abstract | In the paper we describe the pathophysiology, incidence, diagnostic methods (clinical, biochemical, imaging, electrophysiological methods and MR spectroscopy) and new methods of treatment. Among new diagnostic methods the continuous amplitude integrated EEG makes possible the determination of the severity of HIE in the first 3-6h after birth. In the treatment of HIE promising preliminary results have been published withmild to moderate early head and whole body hypothermia. The final results of several multicentric studies are pending in 2004. | |
