Abstract | Children who have experienced war and armed conflict and who live in exceptionally unfavourable socio-economic post-wor conditions are exposed to many risk factors with respect to their psychosocial development. There is a great need to improve their mental health and help them develop their self-control. In regions affected by war, particularly in rural areas, there are very few services involved in mental hygiene. Moreover, in addition to there being many obstacles, potential users have many doubts about using these services. Schools and teachers can play a key protective role in chitdren's development in these circumstances. Teachers can create a safe, friendly and motivating psychosocial atmosphere for all children. They can support and strengthen the psychological strength of children who have suffered loss, experienced traumatic events and who live in chronically unfavourable social and family circumstances. Primary schools include all children in need of psychosocial help, who will not receive such help from those involved in mental hygiene. Schools can also have a healing effect on these children. The author describes the Slovene experience in the realisation of psychosocial programmes for teachers affected by war and the unfavourable post-war conditions on the territory of the former Yugoslavia. | |
