Abstract     There has been increased interest in the use of capnometry in recent years. During cardiopulmonary resuscitation the PetC02 correlates with cardiac output and, consenquently, has a prognostic value in CPR. This study was undertaken to compare the initial PetC02 and the PetC02 after 1 minute in asphyxial cardiac arrest versus primary cardiac arrest. The initial PetC02 is significantly higher in asphyxial than in VF/VT cardiac arrest. Regarding asphyxial arrest there is no difference in values of initial PetC02 between patients with and without ROSC, so in this case the initial PetC02 cannot be used as a prognostic factor of outcome of CPR.
