Abstract     Digoxin is the most commonly prescribed cardiac glycoside. Digitalis glycosides are used to treat supraventricular tachydysrhythmias and congestive heart failure. Toxicity results from both - acute overdose and from chronic use. At increased risk are elderly patients and patients with underlying medical conditions (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart or renal disease or electrolyte abnormalities). Correlating clinical symptoms with serum levels is difficult, because toxicity can occur with serum levels that are within the therapeutic range (serum digoxin levels are neither sensitive nor specific for toxicity). Dysrhythmias are the most common cardiac manifestation and nearly any rhythm disturbance can occur.
