Abstract     Antiepileptic drugs are primarily used in prevention of epileptic seizures. However they are also very useful in psychiatry as mood stabilizers. Carbamazepine and valproate are on the front line, but also Gabapentin, Lamotrigine and Topiramate become more and more popular. Clonazepam is also used as a psychotropic drug quite often, They ha ve various mechanisms of adion: they exert effect on sodium, potassium and calcium channels, and they enhance GABA-ergic system but inhibit glutamatergic system, which result in antimanic, anxiolyticand sedated action. Some of them (Lamictal) have antidepressive effect. The main indication are bipolar affective disorder, especially rapid cycling phases and mixt forms. They are also effective in agitated and agressive personality disorders and in alcohol withdrawal syndrome. We should pay attention of possible serious adverse effect (with Carbamazepine, Valproate, Lamictal), but also of interactions with other medication which could decrease or increase the blood level of the drug.
