| Abstract | The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of preoperative serum CA 125 values and preoperative twodimensional transvaginal ultrasound in determinating the status of retroperitoneal lymph nodes in patients with ovarian malignancy. Methods: In this retrospective study 47 patients with ovarian malignancy, in which retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy was performed as a part of the therapy at our department in the period between January 1993 and December 2000, were included. In all patients the preoperative serum CA 125 level was obtained and twodimensional transvaginal ultrasound examination was performed. After operation, retroperitoneal lymph nodes were sent for histopatologic evaluation and determination of metastatic infiltration. Statistical methods: Chi-squere test, Mann-Whitney U-test. Sensitivity, specificity, positive prediction values, negative prediction values and accuracy of tests were calculated. Results: The differences between group with positive lymph nodes and group with negative lymph nodes were not statisticaly significant in categories such CA 125 values or tumor ehographic characteristics. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive values, negative predictive values and accuracy of tests did not prove to be useful in preoperative evaluation of lymph nodes status in patients with ovarian malignancy. Preoperative evaluation of lymph nodes status would be very helpful for a surgeon in chooosing the proper operative procedure. Conclusion: Our study showed that on the basis of preoperative determination of tumor marker CA 125 and twodimensional transvaginal ultrasound in patients with ovarian malignancy, it is not possible to predict metastasis in retroperitoneal lymph nodes. | |
