Abstract		Due to various reasons the hospital treatment of psychiatric patients is getting shorter every year. It has been established that it is more cost-effective and easier to visit clients in their homes, that is in their real micro- and macro-environment where the functioning problems occur. Occupational therapy in the clients' living environment means the specialisation of occupational therapy in the context of the disinstitutionalisation of patients who thus become clients. First the article presents the fields of occupational therapy, suitable for the mental health field. This is followed by a presentation of occupational treatment with special emphasis on occupational therapy in the community, and by a detailed definition of individual occupational treatment in the clients' home environment.
