Abstract     Arterial hypertension is the most important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Early detection and treatment prevents damage to target organs. There is a low prevalence of essential hypertension in childhood. In the measurement of blood pressure and evaluation of the results numerous dilemmas are encountered. Despite this, research indicates that the elevation of blood pressure in childhood predicts eventual fixed hypertension in adulthood. The connection is not very hard-and-fast, measurement of blood pressure in childhood and adolescence is however also important for other reasons, not in the least being the promotion of cardiovascular health.
