Abstract     Drug abuse and methadone intoxication in children are increasing in our country and also worldwide. Methadone is synthetic substance diphenylpropylamine that shares many characteristics with morphine. Through its action on endorphin receptors methadone causes sedation, respiratory depression, hypotension, pupillary constriction and severe cases of intoxication can lead to unconsciousness, coma and respiratory arrest. History, clinical signs and symptoms and toxicological analysis are important in diagnosis of methadone intoxication. Following stabilisation of airway, breathing and circulation, the specific antidote for methadone intoxication is naloxone. In this article actions of methadone and treatment of methadone intoxication are described.
