Abstract     A structured approach to the assessment and management of the seriously injured child, which enables the professional to care for the seriously injured child in a logical, efficient sequence, is presented. During the primary examination vital functions are assessed. The primary assessment and resuscitation are performed simultaneously, with resuscitation being commenced immediately if any life-threatening problem is found. The secondary assessment is only commenced when the primary examination is completed and the child is stable following resuscitation, and proceeds from head to toe. The next step in the structured approach comprises emergency measures, which are not so urgent as those life-saving measures performed during the resuscitation phase, but they are important nevertheless. Definitive care is the final step in the structured approach to the injured child, and it is often carried out by a different team that which initially managed the child.
