Abstract     Background. The article describes the initial assessment and treatment of women complaining of UL The main elements and aims of the initial assessment are listed. The importance of the assessment of the correct voluntary pelvic floor muscle contraction as a condition for the effectiveness of pelvic floor muscle training is stressed. Initial treatment options with the emphasis on conservative treatment as first line of treatment are described. The value of the person-specific pelvic floor muscle training programme is presented. Recommendations for the pelvic floor muscle training (alone or in combination with other physical adjuncts such as biofeedback, electrical simulation, and vaginal cones) in women with stress and/or urge urinary incontinence, based on scientific evidence from the literature are given.
