Abstract     The existence of the mankind is the basic function of a human group. The human infant, after birth, has an especially long developmental period in which to pass through a dependent relation to others. Its family, its first group, has to create an atmosphere where a child could pass through the dependent relation towards autonomy. In every group as well as within the family, we can observe a creative antagonism between the need to be connected to the group and the need to become an individual. this creative antogonism lies at the interpersonal as well as at the intrapersonal level. A hypothesis that by creating a distance to others, someone can achieve his autonomy, is wrong. The developmental process of the individuation and separation is feasible only within a group matrix. A human being exists only under the circumstances of the relations to other people. In the history of mankind his group experience is the cradle of his individuality.
