Abstract     Background. Primary liver carcinoma (PLC) is the commonest tumor in the world but its occurrence is low in Western Europe and North America. Its incidence in Slovenia is only 0.75%. Methods. Documentation of 56 patients treated operatively for PLC between O1.Ol .l 987 in 31.l 2.1996 at Department of abdominal surgery UMC Ljubljana, was retrospectively analyzed. We used Kaplan-Meier method for survival analysis and Cox regression model for multivariate analysis of survival. Resulfs. Among 56 patients treated with liver resection for PLC in 10 years there were 65% males and 70% of patients were between 50 and 70 years old. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was the commonest type (80%) and was accompanied with liver cirrhosis in 83%. In 85% the risk factor for development of cirrhosis was excessive drinking of alcohol. Radical liver resection was achieved in 80% of cases. Average diameter of tumor was estimated at 55 +- 5mm and in 80% of cases tumors were solitary. One half of the patients were categorized in TNM stage 1 and 2. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
