Abstract | Hippocrates already accurately described anatomy of the spleen. Embriologic development is important to understand developmental anomalies (asplenia, polysplenia, splenogonadal fusion, accessory spleens). Spleen has several ligamentous attachements, i.e. gastrosplenic, pancreatosplenic, splenorenal and splenophrenic. Splenic artery most commonly divides into 2 or 3 major branches. According to this, spleen can be divided into 2-3 segments that are separated by avascular planes. Splenic vein is formed by coalescence of intralobar veins near the splenic hilum. Anatomy of the spleen is simple and we would like to stress the importance of conservative approach in treating surgical diseases of the spleen. | |
