Abstract     Background Breastfeeding in Slovenia as in other industrialised countries is on rise again. However the goals of the Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding set by WHO and UNICEF are not yet fully met. Average percentage of breastfed infants at discharge from maternity departments in Slovenia was for last ten years over 90 (considering ever breastted rate 96.7%). In the year 1999 there was a 15 to 50% span of the breastfeeding rates at 6 months In different parts of Slovenia but no data is available about exclusive breastfeeding rates which most probably would not reach even aforementioned numbers. In Europe the best statistical data about breastfeeding rates come from Nordic countries the best results demonstrate Norway (at initiation, at 6 and 12 months). Among 29 European countries Slovenia ranges sixth with breastfeeding rates at discharge from maternity hospitals, after Austria, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Czech Republic consecutively. At percentage in Baby Friendly Hospital (8FH) born infants Slovenia ranges second with 85%, after leader Sweden with 100% infants born in BFH. Among actions for breastfeeding promotion as is for instance the Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding, this year Europe under the presidency of Ireland published new action plan - nProtection, promotion and support of breastfeeding in Europe: a blueprint tor action«. In Slovenia, country with relatively long tradition of breastfeeding promotion, after establishing the National committee for breastfeeding promotion (NCBP) with UNICEF Slovenia in spring 1996, there were quickly startlng many activities for breastfeeding promotlon.
