Abstract     Background: To verify the incidence of hospitalization of infants because of breastfeeding difficulties. Methods: From January 1 to December 31, 2003 the retrospective review of hospitalized infants for breast feeding difficulties admitted to the Paediatric Department of General Hospital in Celje was done. Included were exclusively breastfed infants aged from 6 days to 6 weeks with no signs of infection. Dehydration, hyperbilirubinemia and/or poor weight gain were used as the signs of breastfeeding difficulties. Results: Because of breastfeeding difficulties 10 children (7 boys, 3 girls) aged from 6 days to 6 weeks were admitted. Among 1427 newborns in the year 2003 who were exclusively breastfed at discharge from the hospital 0,7 % were admitted because of breastfeeding difficulties. The signs of breastfeeding difficulties were: dehydration in 2 children (20%), dehydration and poor weight gain in 1 child (10%), dehydration, poor weight gain and hyperbilirubinemia in 4 children (40%), poor weight gain and hyperbilirubinemia in 1 child (10%) and poor weight gain in 1 child (10%). Conclusion: Because of breastfeeding difficulties there were a small number of children admitted to the hospital. Despite that it is important to educate parents to recognize the signs of inadequate intake of breast milk in order to prevent the breastteeding tragedies. Infant weight gain provides highly reliable criteria for assessing the effectiveness of breastfeeding.
