Abstract     Background: Healthy nutrition of breastfeeding mother confers benefits to infants as well as mothers. Mothers and babies form an inseparable unit. Health and nutrition of breastfeeding mother is not and can not be viewed separately from the health and nutrition of her infant. Maternal nutritional adequacy cannot be assumed only from data on infant growth and milk composition, because milk nutrient content can be maintained by depletion of maternal nutrient stores. Conclusions: Efforts to promote breast-feeding should include strategies to promote healthy nutrition, which should be started as soon as possible, ideally already before begin of pregnancy.
