Abstract     Background: Despite well-documented health benefits of breastfeeding for babies and mothers, mostwomen discontinue breastfeeding before the recommended age of the child. The purpose of this study was to assess some factors, associated with the duration of breastfeeding. Mothers (N=142) answered a questionnaire about breastfeeding history, their attitudes and subjective norms toward breastfeeding, perceived breastfeeding support and self-confidence. Methods: 142 mothers with children aged 22 months or younger, participated in this study Mothers completed self-administrated questionnaires between May and June 2004, when they visited the child s paediatrician. "The questionnaire about breastfeeding includes 38 questions about breastfeeding experiences and factors, influencing the breastfeeding duration. Processing of data was made by computer programs SPSS 11.0, Microsoft Excel and Word. Results: The duration of breastfeeding is positively associated with mother s age, employment, gender of child, mother s attitude toward breastfeeding, when she is pregnant or ill and her selfconfidence. There were no differences in mother s ethnicity, income, use of comforter, smoking, body mass index or attitude toward returning to work while breastfeeding. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
