Abstract     Infections associated with implanted medical devices may be prevented perioperatively (primary prophylaxis) and later on during patient's life (secondary prophylaxis). Primary prophylaxis is related to surgical prophylaxis. Secondary prophylaxis is given to prevent bacteremia accompanying various procedures, most ofted invasive dental treatment. Prevention guidelines are based on consensus opinion of experts rather than randomized controlled clinical trials.ln the patients with prosthetic heart valves and prosthetic joints, the prevention guidelines specifythe type of procedure and the group of patients at risk together with appropriate choice and dose of antibiotics. In patients with other implants, guidelines are less clear In all cases the risk of infection and the risk of prophylaxis should be weighted individually. In this paper, prevention practices in patients with various implants are presented.
